Military: food riots - 2 privates of Oxfordshire Militia (Avery & Midwinter) received death sentences for their recent part in food riots at Newhaven in Sussex & stealing 1000 bushels of flour from the sloop "Lucey". Avery, an idiot, recommended for mecy & reprieved.

Politics: ## riot - Monday last, many women boarded a vessel in our river, containing wheat & flour, intended for Bristol & immense concourse of people assembled on the Quay. Riot Act read, crowds did not disperse. Col Burgoyne & Essex Light Dragoons were called & dispersed the people. The corn was relanded & put quietly in owner's warehouses.

News: extract of letter from Mr Muir dated Sydney [Australia] 13 Dec 1794 to a friend in London - money of no value here; rum, tobacco & sugar bought on voyage, the only medium of exchange, hence need for supplies by ship. Rum (originally bought for 18d/gallon) can sell here for 30s. Less than 8 galls spirits (bought at 18d/gallon) can buy a goat costing £10. Tobacco bought in Rio for 3d/lb, sells here at 3s 6d.
